Humanities Major

The Program offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A) degree. The HWC major is an interdisciplinary program that gives you the freedom to create a course of study uniquely shaped to your interests. HWC offers intensive faculty advising and indvidualized curriculum planning for students in the program. You can choose an emphasis in humanities, in humanities with literature, or in Western Civilization. If you are an HWC major, you begin by identifying your interests in areas such as philosophy, religion, history, theatre, literature, women's studies, and the arts. Your major might combine courses to focus on such interdisciplinary topics as peace, humor, or hunger. Popular courses such as the Masterpieces of World Literature series, the Biography of a City series, and Science, Technology, and Society are offered, along with many others.

The HWC major stresses reading, writing, and critical thinking and requires that you write a capstone essay during your senior year reflecting your integrated study. This essay will address a topic of your choice developed under the direction of a faculty member in a humanities discipline. Above all, this major encourages you to see and think about the similarities and differences among disciplines and cultures.

Peace & Conflict Studies Minor

Offered through the Humanities & Western Civilization Program, the Peace & Conflict Studies Minor is a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approach to the study of human conflict among world cultures. It examines the origins and nature of conflict within and between societies and the various ways in which humans address conflict (through war, mediation, law, diplomacy, institutions, peaceful resistance, and among others). Combining coursework and experiential learning, students gain a better understanding of the importance of building peaceful and equitable forms of social coexistence.
